April 15 is\u00a0National Bookmobile Day!! It’s a day for celebrating\u00a0“our nation\u2019s bookmobiles<\/a> and the dedicated library professionals who provide this valuable and essential service to their communities every day.”<\/strong><\/p>\n Look at this BICYCLE BOOKMOBILE<\/a> from Arcata, California!!!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/a>\n Traveling libraries have been around since the mid-1800s. Started in the UK, they were horse-drawn and originally called\u00a0perambulating libraries<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/a>\n The first bookmobile<\/a>\u00a0in the United States was started by librarian Mary Titcomb in 1904.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/a>\n Look at this beauty\u00a0from 1949!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/a>\n The READING ROCKET<\/a> (great name!!) is the bookmobile of the Denver Public Library and it runs on bio-diesel!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/a>\n Here’s what the interior of one bookmobile from Ohio<\/a> looks like:<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/a>\n The Oakland Public Library in California got a fancy new one last year. It’s called the\u00a0Mobile Outreach Vehicle (MOVe<\/a>) and has “wifi access, laptops, tablets, video games, movies, music, books, and a variety of programs and crafts”!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n Also in Oakland, California,\u00a0(though not “mobile”) there is a LIBRARY BOOK VENDING MACHINE<\/a>!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/a>\n Did you know that there is a traveling DIGITAL BOOKMOBILE<\/a> where people can download information??<\/strong><\/p>\n Additionally, some Norwegians get their library\u00a0materials from special kind of bookmobile, a SHIP named Epos<\/em><\/a>!!!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/a>\n Kenyan children have a CAMEL-DRAWN bookmobile<\/a>!!!! I’m not kidding!!<\/strong><\/p>\n LOOK!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n Celebrate National Bookmobile Day (which is part of National Library Week) by\u00a0“thanking bookmobile staff, writing a letter or e-mail to their libraries, or voicing their support to community leaders.”<\/strong><\/p>\n Reading is fun!! YAY for BOOKMOBILES!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/a>\n
