But she&#8217;s still planning to vote \u2014 from space.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s critical to participate in our democracy,&#8221; Rubins\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/houston-moscow-archive-texas-russia-18a18a56b64bc0e43687c4f3c521e065\">told<\/a>\u00a0the Associated Press. &#8220;We consider it an honor to be able to vote from space.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/astronauts\/biographies\/kathleen-rubins\/biography\/\">Rubins<\/a>, who has a Ph.D. in cancer biology from Stanford and was the first person to sequence DNA in space, is currently training for her upcoming six-month mission on the International Space Station.<\/p>\n<p>Voting from the space station is similar to voting absentee from anyplace on the planet \u2014 except instead of relying on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/09\/09\/911188433\/how-the-postal-service-is-gearing-up-for-mail-in-voting\">U.S. Postal Service\u00a0<\/a>to deliver the ballot, Rubins will get hers forwarded electronically from Mission Control in Houston.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Using a set of unique credentials sent to each of them by e-mail, astronauts can access their ballots, cast their votes, and downlink them back down to Earth,&#8221; the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/stories\/editorial\/how-do-astronauts-vote-space\">explained<\/a>\u00a0in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The ballot is then sent to the county clerk for tabulation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HOW COOL IS THAT?!
